You might think that at French hospitals you get to eat « haute cuisine ». Well, you don’t. Especially if you’re vegetarian. Actually at French public hospitals, they don’t even know what vegetarianism means. (You get fish when you ask for a vegetarian dish.) So, if you stay for a long period you have the choice between getting sick (or at least being put in a bad mood) or starving. Unless you have amazing friends who transform every meal at the hospital into a little party by bringing home-made food or Palak Paneer from your favorite Indian restaurant. It’s not only about eating things you like; sharing a meal with good friends on your hospital bed can actually make you forget that you are in the hospital. As the Germans say “Liebe geht durch den Magen” (Love goes through the stomach) Now, I know: “Freundschaft auch” (Friendship too).
(PS: Before cooking a 3-course menu, just check if your sick friend doesn’t have a special diet.)

Apparemment bien manger permet de guérir plus vite. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que quand vous êtes à l’hôpital, bien manger hausse considérablement votre qualité de vie. Malheureusement dans les hôpitaux publics, vous n’êtes pas attablé(e) à la bonne enseigne pour ce coup-là. (oui, les médecins, les infirmières, les aides-soignantes et les secrétaires médicales sont excellents, mais, désolée, la nourriture est immangeable.) Surtout quand vous êtes végétarienne, et qu’on vous sert soit du poisson (faudra m’expliquer) ou quatre œufs par jour (!) pour remplacer la viande. Alors, rien de tel qu’un dîner fait maison pour vous faire oublier que vous êtes à l’hôpital. D’ailleurs, les repas ramenés de votre restaurant indien préféré marchent aussi. L’essentiel c’est qu’ils soient partagés avec de bons amis.
(Petit conseil pratique: Amis, vérifiez quand même que votre ami malade n’ait pas de régime spécial avant de vous lancer dans la préparation d’un menu de Master chef.)
